Frequently Asked Questions

  • Getting started is simple. Reach out through my contact form or email me at cammickin@gmail.com

I’ll walk you through the next steps and answer any questions along the way.

  • It starts with you reaching out via the link above or my contact page. A short blurb about what you are looking for will suffice.

I will ask then ask you for details about the commission. This includes the size of the painting, the subject, what surface you want it on (think canvas vs wood panel) etc. I am also happy to work within your budget to create something amazing!

If you already have a photo that you want painted, I will request it via email. I can also help you take a reference photo. If you are in the California Bay Area I can take the photography myself. If you are further away, check out my FAQ or post about what makes a good photo for a commission.

Once we have agreed on the details of the artwork, I will send a contract and an invoice. Cost of materials will be due before I start the painting, and the full cost of the commission will be billed upon completion along with any framing and shipping costs

Once I have begun work on the painting, I will notify you. The next check in will be once I have completed the under painting. An underpainting establishes the composition of the painting but lacks detail and often color. This will be the last chance to make major revisions.

When the painting is complete, I will share photographs to make sure you are happy. At this stage we can make minor tweaks or corrections. I will then varnish the painting and let it dry for a week before framing and shipping.

  • Price depends on the exact painting commissioned. Factors like portrait size & shape, complexity of the reference photo, and materials used all impact cost. This is why I require clients contact me so we can discuss the commission instead of just having options to buy online.

Some examples of pricing is below. Prices do not include shipping or framing costs.

    9x12in - $200

    11x14in - $250

    Two People/Couple

    9x12in - $250

    11x14in - $300

    16x20in - $600

    18x24in - $800

Other sizes and shapes are available including oval or round.

  • I prefer to use oil paints although occasionally I will use acrylic paints, oil sticks, or oil pastels if the painting requires it.

As for surfaces, I prefer to paint on panels because they are rigid and allow for more detail. Gesso board is my preferred surface, although I can also use wood panels, canvas panels, and traditional canvas as well.

  • Collaborative, honest, and straightforward. As an artist taking commissions, my first priority is making sure my client will be happy. I offer direction throughout the process as well as my artistic opinion and guidance. Sometimes this may mean refusing requests if I think they will not translate well to paintings, but this is rare.

  • It depends on the size & complexity of the piece and my schedule.

For example, an 11×14in portrait with a solid color background will take 2-3 weeks to paint, while a 16×20in portrait of a couple with a scenic background will take 4-5weeks. Add 1 week to dry and for varnish upon completion of the painting.

I will do my best to estimate the time it will take to complete the painting early in the commission process.

  • This question is key, as the reference photo is very important!

You don’t have to be a professional photographer to take a great photo for a commission at all. What is important is that the subject is clear and in focus.
